Waking up on Monday to the sounds of torrential rain and thunder prompted a nice sleep-in until 7am when I got hungry and wandered downstairs for breakfast. I enjoyed some tasty morning food and chatted with a woman who lives in Georgia and was doing some horse-transporting in Florida. Unfortunately her trailer was empty at the time so nothing furry to poke at, but hopefully she made it home safe and sound with her new horse in tow. I spent the day being exceptionally lazy, mostly lying on top of a mound of pillow and watching bad TV and the weather channel. There was also a walk around town and trip to the grocery store to buy some discount cereal, but although there was meant to be a break in the storm activity from about 1-4 in the afternoon the strong headwind and spacing of towns meant that I decided to stay at the hotel another night. I can't say enough good things about the staff and owners of Defuniak Springs hotel in terms of being friendly and accommodating, and Cate even made me a 'breakfast bag' for the morning when I told her I would be gone before eggs would be ready.
Even after doing nothing all day, I was able to fall asleep by 8pm in anticipation of an early start on Tuesday which predicted 10-30mph tailwinds. Unsure of how far I would get, I figured that I would essentially just try to cover some ground towards Jacksonville and see where it took me. Some WS folks in Tallahassee were on alert that I might show up, but with that being 100 miles down the road I figured I would just play it by ear and see how I felt midday.
