Quality bike is right, well worth a stop in Savannah! |
El Toro gets some TLC |
It was highway riding with a pretty good shoulder for much of it. At one point I saw a man walking his bike on the other side of the divided highway. I called out and he made a hand motion that might have been obscene to passers-by but I recognized as wanting a bike pump. He was in luck, and we pumped up his tire to help him get home so his daughter could yell at him for mucking up her bike. I also managed to miss the turn-off to get to Ann's house, our Warmshowers host who was in the southern part of Savannah, and wound up riding what felt like much too far. When I did stop and check my state map, it turns out I missed the turn by about 7 miles. Ack!
Cursing my lack of more detailed map or smart/dumb/useful-phone technology, I wandered into a discount furniture store and a nice man in there let me look up directions on his computer. I think he found the whole thing quite entertaining and I left with a good set of directions, so we were both quite happy. I got to see a different side of Savannah than I might have otherwise, including areas that were quiet during the day but I don't think I would have biked through solo at nighttime.
I made it closer to Ann's house, checked in at the Domino's pizza place to make sure I hadn't accidentally missed the turn off (it was just a few blocks further) and, like fate, came across a bicycle shop. My pedal had been clicking disconcertingly and I wanted to just get someone to give Nancy a once-over at this 1000 mile-ish mark, so I went in. So glad I did! A man of adventure and avid outdoorsperson, Todd was beyond helpful and generous to both Sam and I in making sure we were in good shape for the miles to come.
We wound up at Ann's house and got settled, meeting her three poodles who would be sharing their house with us, and then the three of us went to get some Southern-style food. Delicious! Perfect set-up for a day of exploring in Savannah to follow.
